Three was built as a data first network and that focus still shows in its pricing. Unlimited data plans are among the most competitive in the UK market, and the network has invested heavily in 5G coverage in cities. For anyone who regularly burns through data allowances or relies on their phone for hotspot connectivity, Three is worth serious consideration. Coverage in rural areas has historically been less complete than EE or Vodafone, though the ongoing merger with Vodafone's infrastructure is expected to improve this over time.
Three operates its own network infrastructure. MVNOs running on Three include Smarty, iD Mobile, Superdrug Mobile, and FreedomPop. If Three coverage works for your location but the direct plans feel expensive, these MVNOs often offer comparable data allowances at lower prices.
Three customers can access the Three+ app for discounts, treats, competition entries, and partner offers. The range of rewards is lighter than O2 Priority but still provides periodic value for engaged customers.
Three and Vodafone are merging their UK network infrastructure following regulatory approval. In the near term this means Three customers can automatically access Vodafone signal in more places at no extra cost. Over the longer term the combined network is expected to provide significantly better coverage, particularly in areas where Three was previously weak.
Three charges a daily fee for activating your UK data allowance in Europe and some further destinations. The daily cost and the countries included depend on your plan check the current Go Roam or equivalent terms before travelling, as the list of included destinations and fair use caps have changed over the years.
Three completed its 3G switch off in 2024. Unlike EE and Vodafone, Three never operated a 2G network, which means voice calls rely entirely on 4G Calling (VoLTE) or WiFi Calling. In effect that means older "dumb" phones that don't support VoLTE won't be able to call on Three check your device specifications if you have an older handset. Newer "dumb phones", or phones marketed as "senior phones" should still work just very, very, very old ones will not. Think the original Nokia 3310.
Three's Pay Monthly plans include an annual price change each April. The increase is linked to inflation (CPI) plus a fixed percentage. Check your specific plan terms at the point of purchase for the exact formula that applies, and factor in the potential cost increase when comparing plans across networks.
